Dr Lui Che-woo Awarded the Degree of Doctor of Social Sciences Honoris Causa for His Contributions to the Community and Higher Education

Dr Lui Che-woo was conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa at the 195th Congregation of the University of Hong Kong ("HKU") in Loke Yew Hall on 15 March 2016, in recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of social civilisation and educational development. The ceremony was officiated by Dr the Honourable Sir David Li, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong. The other four recipients of honorary degrees included Dr Elsie Leung, Dr Tsui Lap-Chee, Dr Victor Joseph Dzau and Dr Mary-Claire King.

The honorary doctoral degrees of HKU are awarded to individuals in recognition of their distinguished contributions to the University, the local community and to academia and those who have made valuable intellectual, social and cultural contributions to society and the world. Being the highest honour awarded by HKU, it has an illustrious history with Dr Charles Kao, Prof Jao Tsung-I, Mother Teresa and Dr Hu Shi among the recipients.

Over the years, Dr Lui keeps the principle of “rewarding the society with the benefits we have earned from the society,” devoting tremendous efforts to reward the community while creating economic value. He has been particularly supportive of the development of medical care, higher education, elementary education, and the hotel and tourism industries. He has been an ardent benefactor of HKU as a Founding Honorary President of the HKU Foundation. The Lui Che Woo Law Library of HKU was named in his honour in 1997, while a new Law Library was built in the Centennial Campus in 2010 with Dr Lui's financial support. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded an Honorary University Fellowship in 2002. Dr Lui has also rendered generous support for academic research and campus development at many other universities, and has been conferred honorary degrees by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as well as the Concordia University and the University of Victoria in Canada.
