Dr Lui Che-woo makes RMB200 million donation to Tsinghua University for the construction of "Lui Che Woo Pharmaceutical Sciences Building" and "Lui Che Woo Medical Sciences Building"

In keeping with his firm belief in education as the key to a nation’s rise to greatness, Dr Lui Che-woo, Chairman of K. Wah Group and Director of LUI Che Woo Charity, announced in October 2018 the donation of RMB200 million to Tsinghua University to fund the construction of two new blocks at the Tsinghua University Biomedical Sciences Building, which are set to provide premium research and teaching facilities for the faculty and students. Tsinghua University will name the two blocks as “Lui Che Woo Pharmaceutical Sciences Building” and “Lui Che Woo Medical Sciences Building”. Witnessed by faculty members and students of the University as well as members of the press, Chen Xu, Chancellor of Tsinghua University, and Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, signed the donation agreement with Dr Lui on behalf of the University and Tsinghua University Education Foundation, respectively, to unveil the joint effort to drive the research, innovation and sustainable development of life, medical and pharmaceutical sciences.

 

“Lui Che Woo Pharmaceutical Sciences Building” and “Lui Che Woo Medical Sciences Building” as a contribution to scientific research

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Lui said that the development of medical technology is an important cornerstone to the well-being of future generations of the human race. He looked forward to the development of “Lui Che Woo Pharmaceutical Sciences Building” and “Lui Che Woo Medical Sciences Building” into a national base for the research and teaching of major technologies, a facility which will further enhance academic research and scientific and technological innovation at Tsinghua University and play an active role in the betterment of the welfare and sustainable development of mankind.

The Biomedical Sciences Building will be built in four wings and mainly used by the School of Life Sciences for teaching and scientific research in life sciences, medicine, pharmaceutical sciences and other cross-disciplinary subjects. It will also house top scientific research institutions including Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Structural Biology, McGovern Institute for Brain Research and National Center for Protein Science. “Lui Che Woo Pharmaceutical Sciences Building” is intended to provide the venue for teaching and scientific research in pharmacological developments, while housing scientific research institutions such as Global Health Drug Discovery Institute (Beijing), Tsinghua Pharmaceutical Innovation Center and Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. “Lui Che Woo Medical Sciences Building” is intended to provide the venue for teaching and scientific research in cross-disciplinary subjects in life sciences.

Wah Group and Director of LUI Che Woo Charity.

The idea and practice of “inclusivity in diversity”

Following the signing ceremony, Dr Lui and Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, joined a symposium chaired by Long Denggao, Director of the Center for Chinese Entrepreneur Studies. Dr Lui shared his views on the idea of “inclusivity in diversity” with faculty members and students and the stories of his business venture over 60 years, as well as the beliefs and insights underlying the inception of “LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation”. He encouraged the students to show more concern for world issues with a broader global vision and work in united effort to promote sustainable development. Dr Lui then responded to questions raised by the faculty members and students, before the symposium ended in loud applause as a student representative presented flowers to him.
