Prior to the event, President Chen Jining gave an introduction of Tsinghua University to the delegation about its scale, curricula, cross-disciplinary studies and talent nurturing. During the sharing session, Dr Lui began with his passion for giving back to the society. Deprived of education at a young age due to warfare, he was motivated by the sarcasm made by the Japanese towards the education level in China. As his businesses grow and excel along the years, Dr Lui spares no effort in contributing to development of elementary and tertiary education in the Mainland.

Dr Lui said, “Education plays a pivotal role in the development and economic growth of a country. It also helps boost social and racial harmony.” He pointed out that education paves the way to the improvements of human beings. During his business trip in Kunming a few years ago, Dr Lui witnessed a migrant worker’s hardships of life which gave him a great feeling. This inspired him to help improve people’s livelihood in remote areas of China. Upon returning to Hong Kong, Dr Lui contacted the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for a collaboration programme with the Ministry of Education of China to construct and renovate 122 primary and secondary schools across eight provinces within five years.

Commenting on the required attributes of talents nowadays, Dr Lui indicated that the youth not only have to equip themselves with “hard skills” for their professional development, but also “soft skills,” i.e. the passion to serve both the country and the society. In the course of academic and future pursuits, Dr Lui encouraged young people to cultivate their ethical mind-sets, appreciate the Chinese culture and the social environment, so as to contribute to the society and the development of our country. These elements together with the “Strengthening China through Talents” strategy will bring to the realization of the “Chinese Dream”.
