LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation 2017
Sustainability Prize Laureate Public Lecture

Hong Kong, 4 October 2017 – The LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation (“the LUI Che Woo Prize” or “the Prize”) Sustainability Prize Laureate Mr Xie Zhenhua delivered a public lecture to a full house titled “Steadfast Confidence, Active Promotion of Global Climate Governance” at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (“CUHK”). Over 400 guests attended the lecture and with live streaming.

Mr Xie Zhenhua is awarded the Sustainability Prize, with the Specific Area of Focus on "Prevention of Climate Change", for his crucial role in championing international negotiations, culminating in the successful conclusion of the Paris Agreement in 2015, and his efforts in coordinating and promoting the prevention of climate change within China. The policies he devised, advocated and implemented have become models for other developing economies.

At present, the global climate governance process faces new opportunities and challenges. Mr Xie believes that steadfast confidence of different parties is required to actively promote global climate governance and implement the Paris Agreement. Mr Xie shared that as a responsible and large developing country, China has and will continue to take active action to address climate change and make more significant contributions to global green, low-carbon development.
 
In addition to Mr Xie’s lecture, the seminar also featured a forum exchange session moderated by Professor Lau Ngar-cheung Gabriel, Director of Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability (IEES), CUHK. The guest speakers were Mr Xie Zhenhua; Mr Shun Chi-ming, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory; and Dr Rebecca Lee, Founder of the Polar Museum Foundation. Guests attending the seminar included: Dr Lui Che-woo, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Governors cum Prize Council of the LUI Che Woo Prize, representatives from higher education sector and non-profit making organisations. Students from different local secondary schools and universities were also present in the seminar.
 
Founded by Dr Lui Che-woo on 24 September 2015, the LUI Che Woo Prize is an annual, international, cross-sector and innovative award for advancing world civilisation and inspiring people to build a more harmonious world. The LUI Che Woo Prize is an international award that advances with the times. To address ever-evolving global needs and challenges, the Prize will set a Specific Area of Focus under each Prize Category every year.
