The Right Path to 2050: A Future where People and Nature Thrive

The LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation held the Sustainability Prize Laureate Public Lecture at the University of Hong Kong on 4 October 2019. The lecture was entitled “The Right Path to 2050: A Future where People and Nature Thrive”. Secretary Sally Jewell, Chief Executive Officer of The Nature Conservancy - 2019 Sustainability Prize Laureate, spoke on behalf of the organisation on balancing conservation with human development.

The event explored sustainability in light of booming world population – expected to reach 10 billion by 2050. Secretary Jewell shared the view of The Nature Conservancy that we can meet people’s needs without degrading nature, as long as society ramps up sustainability efforts now. In the panel discussion session, panellists also discussed Asia Pacific’s crucial role in balancing the environment, economic growth, and human development.

Panellists included Secretary Jewell; Prof Christine Loh, Chief Development Strategist, Institute for the Environment, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Visiting Professor of the Anderson School of Management, UCLA; Ms Kyoko Altman, Head of Sustainable Investments, HSBC Global Investments, Asia Pacific; and Mr Jonathan Cybulski, Ph.D student, Ecology and Biodiversity, HKU – The Swire Institute of Marine Science.

The LUI Che Woo Prize is an annual cross-sector award which aims to recognise and inspire the efforts of compassionate individuals and organisations working to build a more harmonious world. Founded by Dr Lui Che-woo in 2015, the Prize is an international accolade which advances with the times in order to address ever-evolving global needs and challenges.
