K. Wah Group Hosts Annual Dinner Themed “Together we thrive!”

16 Dec 2008

(Hong Kong, 16 December 2008) – K. Wah Group (the “Group”) today hosted its annual dinner at the Grand Hall, Level 5, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  This year’s theme, “Together we thrive!”, highlighted the Group’s high spirit amidst the financial challenges and its commitment to unite all member companies as well as the community for getting prepared ahead of the coming cycle of economic recovery.

More than a thousand guests and staff members in about 90 tables from the Group’s companies, including K. Wah International Holdings Limited (HKEx: 173), Galaxy Entertainment Group Limited (HKEx: 27), Stanford Hotels International and K. Wah Construction Materials Limited, were present in the celebration.

The current economic environment may have some impact on Hong Kong, but not so much on the enthusiasm of the guests to enjoy an evening with K. Wah. Numerous dignitaries and luminaries cleared their schedules specifically to attend today’s event, including the officiating guests, Mr Li Guikang, Deputy Director, and Mr Zhao Guangting, Secretary General of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR.  Other notable guests included Mr Vincent Cheng, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited;

Dr Chan Sui Kau, Chairman of Yangtzekiang Garment Manufacturing Co. Ltd; Dr William Mong, Chairman & Senior Managing Director of Shun Hing Group; Dr Fong Yun Wah, Chairman of Hip Shing Hong Group, Dr Stanley Ho, Group Executive Chairman of Shun Tak Holdings Ltd; Dr Xu Zheng, Vice-president of Fudan University in Shanghai; Mr Gregory So, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR Government; Mr David Lan, National Committee Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the People’s Republic of China; the Honourable Leung Chun Ying, Member of Executive Council; and the Honourable Howard Young, the Honourable Philip Wong and the Honourable Ronny Tong, Members of Legislative Council.

Dr Che-woo Lui, Chairman of K. Wah Group delivered a speech expressing his respect for Hong Kong people, particularly for their optimism and resilience amidst all of the recent challenges.  Dr Lui used a Confucian quote to encourage his staff and the audience that, “The wise are free from confusion; the virtuous from anxiety; and the courageous from fear”, and therefore, “Let us be resourceful so that we won’t be confused by uncertainties.  Let us stay calm and show kindness so that we won’t be troubled.  Let us be brave to face the challenges ahead.”

Displayed at the venue was a video featuring the Group’s CSR efforts over the past 12 months, including a donation of HK$30 million to Fudan University in Shanghai for the renovation and expansion of its Zibin Building (re-named as Lui Che-Woo Building) and a donation of HK$30 million to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to support the university’s development, in particular for the development of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management.  In recent years, the Group has actively promoted school-enterprise partnership, with the aim to bring about synergy in talent nurturing to achieve overall development and progress.

Dr Lui said, “with our strong financial capability, we shall continue to focus our effort on enhancing our business development, while fulfilling our corporate social responsibility by helping those in need. During the good times, it is always commendable to help others. But when the tides change, it becomes important and even necessary for everyone in the society to concert efforts together to sail it through.”

During the dinner, Dr Lui also presented more than 20 awards to respective divisions that the Group garnered over the year from industries and society in recognition for outstanding performance and service quality.  Among the accolades were the Quality Building Award: “Special Awards Category – Heritage” to J SENSES; Five-Star Diamond Award to StarWorld Hotel; Silver Medal from the 6th World Championship of Chinese Cuisine to Chef Leung Fai Hung; and the HKMA Quality Award to K. Wah Construction Materials Limited.

Orchestrated by the organizing committee formed by the Group’s four core businesses, the annual dinner 2008 was exemplary of teamwork. A live drum performance involving numerous staff members also underscored the theme of “Together we thrive!”  Following the performance, professional singers and dancers from StarWorld Hotel, and special guest Elisa Chan were called on stage to bring the evening to its climax.
