Sponsoring for Marathons and Runs in Hong Kong and Macau to Promote Sports and Recreation
Enhancing Positive Energy in the Society

29 Nov 2015

To uphold its commitment towards “Building the Future with Passion” and give active support of recreational and sporting programmes as part of its corporate social responsibility amid its 60th Anniversary, K. Wah Group acted as the Principal Sponsor of UNICEF Charity Run 2015 with a donation of HK$2 million last year, while its subsidiary GEG also acted as a title sponsor for Macau Galaxy Entertainment International Marathon for the 12th year in a row. Charity campaigns in the form of recreational and sports activities provide an effective means for wider participation, through which K. Wah aims not only to enhance the sense of belonging among its staff, but also to strengthen positive energy in the community to foster harmony.

With the support from management, K. Wah staff from various businesses were eager to lend their enthusiastic support. Some senior management even led by example and enrolled in the runs. Over 250 runners, including K. Wah staff and their associates, joined some 13,000 public runners at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Sunny Bay area for the UNICEF Charity Run in order to raise funds for the worthwhile cause of “AIDS to ZERO”. Our vigorous participation was rewarded with a First Runner-up honour in the Group with the Highest Participants Award.

Paddy Lui, Executive Director of KWIH, said, “The Group recognizes and supports UNICEF’s long-term dedication to the prevention and treatment of HIV infection among children, as well as its continued efforts in educating the young in this regard. The Group is well aware that AIDS continues to be prevalent in developing countries, posing a substantial threat to women and children in particular. K. Wah Group decides to support UNICEF’s objective of protecting children’s healthy development by participating in the UNICEF Charity Run 2015, in the hope of drawing stronger support for UNICEF’s longterm projects in the areas of medical and healthcare services, education, protection of children and prevention of AIDS in over 150 countries.”

Among the GEG runners were senior executives including Francis Lui, Vice Chairman of GEG, Philip Cheng, Director of GEG and Eileen Lui, Group Director of Human Resources and Administration of GEG, who testified themselves with endurance in the long distance run and enjoy the fun with team members running side-by-side. Sports and exercises good for enhancing positive energy

Herbert Hui, CFO of KWIH and Alan Tso, CFO of KWCM, took part in the 3km Leadership Challenge Run and finished with ease. Herbert is a regular runner who has developed the habit by disciplining himself to find time for exercises in his daily routine, no matter how busy he is. He believes that running is a very suitable exercise for office workers who are seated for prolonged periods, as he has found out that running is not only beneficial to the regeneration of the body, but is also very helpful in alleviating emotional stress. According to Herbert, doing sports and exercises as a life-long habit has become an increasingly popular idea and practice among modern people. Participation in the UNICEF Charity Run represents a combination of charity and fashionable sports, which is an effective means to involve everybody in the promotion of community welfare. It is an excellent way to foster upbeat perspectives and positive energy because it means enjoying the satisfaction and fun in sports and following a healthy lifestyle.

Enhancing team spirit and cohesion in the K. Wah family

This year, K. Wah Group sent a corporate team to compete with other companies in the Half Marathon Corporate Relay. Savouring the honour of representing K. Wah, our team of six had spent several months training together, building a strong team rapport while inspiring other individual colleagues to train for the race. As a result, team spirit and mutual understanding had been enhanced, bringing benefits to not just their performance in the race, but also interaction and cooperation in daily work. All the relay team members, being avid amateur runners, thought it had been a beneficial experience for them as they had acquired comprehensive skills and knowledge in running under the coaching of Yeung Shiu Lun and others from Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association prior to the race. They would continue to keep running as a long-term sport for them.

“Team spirit is better acted out than said”

Some say that the word to describe the sweating after running is “cool.” Then, running in two races with a large crowd of colleagues can only be called “supremely cool”!

As an employee of GEG, I was not too acquainted with colleagues at the K. Wah Group. Nevertheless, there was no strangeness at all when all colleagues of K. Wah gathered for warm-up for we were all there in response to the call of the Company. I felt nervous and excited while moving up to the start line under the guidance of the officials, while K. Wah runners encouraged each other, the usual cheer being: “Kill it off!”

At the horn, we charged forward with all our might and for the finish point. After 55 minutes, I dashed past the finish point completing my first 10-km race. As other colleagues finished one by one, we chatted about the ramps and the pain in the knees in excitement. And we cheered so loudly during the aftermath photo-taking, as though we didn’t feel any pain and tiredness at all.

One week after the 10km race came the big day for the Macau Galaxy Entertainment International Marathon, for which GEG acted as the title sponsor. This was very different from the UNICEF Charity Run, for the race route passed through Galaxy Macau™ and Broadway Macau™, my home ground. What’s more, close to 700 colleagues were running in the race, all in the GEG uniform outfit. The sheer air of dominance was exhilarating.

The 4-km race had been completed effortlessly. While I was tongue-tied about my colleagues’ names at the Finish Point, I could easily spot those in GEG uniforms out as my “fellows”. We continued to cheer up the runners towards the finish line with applause altogether. Team spirit is better acted out than said! How awesome it was to show the best team spirit by using different identities to join two races with “K. Wah fellows” in just two weeks!
