LUMA Hotel – Lighting up Times Square, New York

Stanford Hotels Corporation recently added a new member to its family of 15 U.S. hotels, as its brand new proprietary LUMA Hotel was opened in central New York City in May. An immediate standout with its neat and bright character, dynamism, independence and modern pluralistic appearance, LUMA Hotel brings new energy to the New York’s hotel sector and promises a refreshing experience for guests.

A prime location for travelers

LUMA is situated on 41st Street between Sixth Avenue (also known as “Avenue of the Americas”) and Broadway, a prestigious location in the vicinity of Times Square, Bryant Park and the Midtown business district. With world-famous landmarks and shopping centres just steps away, it enjoys immense traffic convenience in the heart of New York City.

Bryant Park in the middle of Midtown Manhattan is an oasis in the midst of the bustling city, a stark contrast to the busy streets of the neighbouring business district.

LUMA HOTEL TIMES SQUARE represents an effort of Stanford Hotels Corporation, a hotel group rated among the top 12 hotel owners and developers of the United States in the 1990s, to create a new brand in boutique hotels in response to the market trend favouring hotels with increasingly specific functions, distinctive themes and diversified developments, according to Lawrence Lui, President of the company. “The demand for tailored and personalised services has become an increasingly dominant trend in the industry,” he commented.

“LUMA is located between Time Square and Bryant Park in New York, one of the busiest cities in the world, so our guests could readily choose between the hustle and bustle of the city and the tranquility of a green landscape,” said Mr Lui. “It is our hope that each boutique hotel would be created as a work of art, characterised by exquisite and unique designs and services that appeal to travelers who value exceptional experiences and have a taste for fashion,” he explained.

Other major landmarks of New York, such as New York Public Library, the largest library in the States, the Grand Central Terminal and Empire State Building, are all within walking distance. A lot of premium office towers housing international corporations can be found nearby, making the hotel a convenient place to stay for business travelers and leisure tourists alike.

Offering attentive services to more customers with LUMA

“As our owned brand, LUMA is committed to the provision of the most attentive services to customers, in line with the Group’s longstanding tradition,” said Mr Lui. For example, one quarter of the guest rooms have been designed as extra-large twin rooms with 2 King size large beds, as most Westerners prefer beds of maximum size. This is an extremely rare design among boutique hotels, which has arguably contributed to LUMA’s increasing popularity.

The Group is also engaged in vigorous expansion elsewhere in the U.S., as large-scale chain hotels in San Francisco and Seattle are scheduled to be opened in the next two years.

Ortzi, the restaurant and bar on the ground floor of LUMA, is specialised in cuisines from Northern Spain designed by Head Chef Jose Garces, a rising star in New York’s culinary sector. He was named Best Chef in the 2009 edition of James Beard Foundation Award, the Oscar of the culinary business, while winning title of “Iron Chef” in The Next Iron Chef, a TV cooking contest of the United States, in 2008.

Guests can enjoy the cuisines and specialty drinks of Northern Spain in the cosy environment of Ortzi.

Ortzi’s northern Spanish cuisines are designed by Jose Garces from Spain, a rising star in New York’s culinary sector appointed head chef by LUMA HOTEL. He was named best chef in the 2009 edition of James Beard Foundation Award for his novel dishes and innovative operation. He is also one of the few chefs in the United States owning the title of “Iron Chef”.

LUMA is one of the first hotels on the East Coast to employ a servicing robot to deliver room-service catering for guests. Operations of the hotel have been smooth since its opening, according to Mr Lui, with a strong order book. He hopes to open proprietary LUMA hotels in other large U.S. cities in the future.
